EASTERN SHORE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Announces Fundraiser for Alabama Coastal Foundation

DAPHNE, AL, June 18, 2010 - - The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce is assisting the Alabama Coastal Foundation with efforts to restore the coastal areas due to the deepwater oil spill in April. ACF is working with local partners, government agencies, and BP to provide safe and effective volunteer opportunities to assist in the clean up. To help with expenses the Eastern Shore Chamber is donating over 200 of the 49th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival Pelican Posters to sell as a fundraiser.

The artwork selected in 2001 was a familiar photograph taken by late Daphne photographer, Richard Scardamalia. The featured artwork depicted brown pelicans perched on the “Fish Busters” boat and is appropriately titled “Return of the Pelicans.” The picture was a commemorative celebration of the return of the brown pelicans to the Eastern Shore area after pollution was cleaned up in Mobile Bay and a celebration of the birth of a new era of environmental awareness, which was a strong concern of Scardamalia.

Scardamalia is best remembered for his photographs of crabs, shrimp and other bay creatures beaching themselves during the jubilee phenomenon. Many of these photos now hang on the walls of numerous Eastern Shore restaurants and businesses.

Richard Scardamalia died of leukemia in December of 1995. He dedicate time to work with the Village Point Foundation on saving generous stretches of bay front land to be utilized by the general public. As a result of his work, Bayfront Park in Daphne was built and subsequently was named for Richard Scardamalia.

The “Return of the Pelicans” photo was the only photograph ever used as artwork for the Arts & Crafts Festival poster. The photograph represents Scardamalia’s love of the environment and his strong commitment to the betterment of environmental causes in our area.

For a $25 or more donation to the Alabama Coastal Foundation donors receive a Pelican Poster to display proudly. An ACF single membership is included with each purchase and each member is invited to receive newsletters and updates about the oil spill and related topics. 100% of all money will go to ACF, and is tax deductible.

The commemorative poster will be a lasting tribute to the Bay and Richard Scardamalia. They are available at both Eastern Shore Chamber offices and at the ACF office in Mobile. Call the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce at 621-8222 or 928-6387 or drop by either chamber office on Fairhope Avenue in Fairhope or at the Scenic Overlook in Daphne. The Alabama Coastal Foundation’s phone number is 990-6002 and they are located at 250 Conti Street, Mobile.
