Leaders Council Spotlight: Richard Johnson

Richard Johnson, a litigator at Phelps Dunbar, not only has a passion for helping his clients, but also for being an active member in the community. As a former board member and President of Family Promise of Baldwin County, an essential organization that assists homeless families with kids in Baldwin County, Johnson is dedicated to making the community a better place. Although no longer on the board, Johnson assists this great organization in any way he can.

After serving on the board of Family Promise, Johnson joined the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, originally as a volunteer member of the Governmental Affairs Committee and eventually became the head of that committee and a member of the Board. Within just a few years, he was selected as Chairman of the Board. "Joining the Chamber has been a great experience. I have met dynamic people, many of which I now consider friends. The Chamber has also been an incredible networking and referral source,” says Johnson.

Johnson credits his love for involvement in the community to his mother. During his childhood, she was heavily involved with Rotary and her local Chamber, even serving for several years as the Executive Director. "I think it is important for local businesses to be involved with the Chamber in order to gain a perspective on the pulse of the community, to recognize key issues and trends in the area where their consumers live and work,” says Johnson.

When Johnson is not assisting his clients with construction, real estate and commercial litigation issues, you can find him out on the water fishing. This hobby has made Johnson an advocate of keeping our bay, rivers and creeks clean for our community and future generations. "Nothing gives me more pride than when we are on the boat and the kids make me stop or turn around to pick up some trash that they have spotted floating in the water,” Johnson said.
