FAIRHOPE, Ala. (Sept. 27, 2018) -- After a successful community campaign led by a teacher who loves sharing her passion for music with students, Fairhope Middle School is now home to a Roland digital piano lab.

Beginning this school year, students at the middle school will have the opportunity to learn the benefits of learning a life-long skill of playing the piano through the efforts of Diane Ham, a longtime piano and choral teacher who believes in the transformational power of studying music.

When asked about the role that this grant and the new piano lab has afforded Fairhope Middle School, Diane Ham, Choral and Piano Director, responds, "With piano class every day, each student progresses very quickly and grows to love music, as a whole. Who would have thought two years ago, a sophomore with no previous piano, would end up with a scholarship to study piano? Did the Piano Lab make a difference in his life? I’d give it a wholehearted ‘yes!’”

Ham’s mission to introduce younger students to the piano was influenced by her impact on her high school aged students.   Learning the piano at an earlier age is a great foundation to build on for a lifetime of playing the instrument.  Fairhope High School also has a digital lab system where the students can learn in a group setting.  In addition to this system, Diane Ham also wanted her students to have access to an acoustic high quality instrument  in her music room and raised monies to purchase a new Steinway-designed Essex grand piano.

It was Ham’s aim to give her students a musical foundation to help them progress and flourish into high school music programs. But to do that, they first needed to learn to play piano.

After one successful campaign to raise funds for music education at the high school level, Ham kicked off a second campaign for the middle school, enlisting the Fairhope Educational Enrichment Foundation and others to take up the cause.

Because of the generosity of many individuals, organizations and businesses, the longtime music teacher now has a piano lab system where she can instruct many students in a single class period.

Amy Foley, president of the board of directors for the Fairhope Educational Enrichment Foundation, said "We were delighted to provide the funding for the middle school lab in order to continue to build upon the success of the high school program, which FEEF also funded.”

"We know that giving children a strong foundation in music has the ability to help them earn better grades and become more creative thinkers,” Foley said. "Our foundation believes that developing the potential of our students through enrichment programs such as the piano lab can impact their lives for the better.”

"As a graduate of Fairhope High School, it was a tremendous honor to provide the pianos for this lab system,” said Christy Myers, Owner, Steinway Piano Gallery Spanish Fort. "The musical impact that Diane Ham has made on her students is truly inspiring.  Many of her students have achieved much success and have competed in our regional Gulf Coast Steinway Society Competition where they have won cash scholarships for their performances and have gone on  to pursue music careers. ”
