35 Students Graduate from the Student Training and Exploration Program

The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of the 2019 Student Training and Exploration Program (STEP) graduates. Thirty-five students graduated from the program Tuesday, April 23 at the Original Oyster House.

The Student Training and Exploration Program (STEP) is a leadership and career pathway exploration initiative. The program engages selected students in the 9th grade and follows them through high school.

Students explore local high-demand career opportunities while connecting classwork with skills needed in the workplace. This program also helps to instill confidence and self-esteem in order for students to reach their highest potential of success.

STEP works in cooperation with the Baldwin County Board of Education, local colleges, technical training facilities and local industries to connect educators to businesses on the Eastern Shore.

"Our goal is for our students to graduate knowing more about the career options available here on the Eastern Shore,” said program director Christina Hellmich.

These students will finish out the program by creating a career plan and timeline based on their goals after high school graduation.

"I hope each of our students have become more self-aware, confident and determined,” said Hellmich. "With these tools, we know these students will be well on their way to achieving success.”

This program could not be possible without the dedication and talent of those who help facilitate rewarding days for these students. The STEP program is proud to have the support of the Chamber Board of Directors, especially the Chamber Foundation Chairman Steve Carey. Our local high schools and counselors also give a great deal of support to make this program possible. We also greatly appreciate Workforce Development Sponsor Daphne Utilities, graduation sponsor Old Tyme Feed and the many in-kind sponsors who support this program.
